At our cat sanctuary, every day is a new adventure. Recently, the excitement has reached some new heights as some of our kitties took part in creating paw-some paintings with our student volunteers from the Manistee Intermediate School District (MISD). In preparation for their First Annual MISD Art Show, Tammy Allmon, the MISD Transition Community Living Experiences Coordinator (TCLE) and Carol Pasco, President of our Little Rascals Cat Sanctuary, Inc., non-profit organization, worked together to facilitate this collaboration.
The Inspiration Behind the Project
The idea for the art show stemmed from the Manistee ISD classroom's desire to engage the community in creative ways while highlighting the unique skills, talents, and diverse creative abilities of their students. Art is a fantastic way for students to express themselves in an inclusive, fun way, so when the opportunity arose for our Little Rascal friends to participate, it was a win-win! Painting is a great way for our cats to get involved because it taps into their playful and curious nature.
The Role of Student Volunteers
Although Tammy Allmon and Carol Pasco were at the helm of this project, the student volunteers play a crucial role in this project. They are involved in every step of the process, from setting up the art supplies to guiding the cats through the painting sessions. Here’s how they make it happen:
Preparation: Students gather non-toxic, pet-safe paints and large sheets of paper. They set up a space where the cats can safely explore and create without any restrictions.
Encouragement: Using toys and treats, students encourage the cats to walk through the paint and onto the paper. This not only creates beautiful paw prints but also provides mental and physical stimulation for the cats.
Cleaning Up: After the painting sessions, students ensure that the cats are cleaned up properly, so no paint is ingested or spread around the sanctuary.
The Creative Process
Each painting session was a delightful mix of chaos and creativity. The cats, with their unpredictable movements and curious nature, often create spontaneous and surprising patterns. Our student volunteers watch with joy as the cats dip their paws in paint, chase after toys, and inadvertently create strokes of color on the canvas.
The Big Event
The upcoming MISD Art Show will be a wonderful community event. Visitors will have the opportunity to view a variety of art work created by the students at Manistee ISD, including our paw-some paintings. We hope to see you there!
