Understanding the Distinction: Cat Rescue vs. Cat Sanctuary

A cat sanctuary and a cat rescue serve similar purposes in that they both aim to provide care and shelter for cats in need. However, there are some key differences between the two:

Mission and Focus:

  • Cat Rescue: Cat rescues primarily focus on rescuing cats from urgent situations such as abandonment, abuse, neglect, or euthanasia in shelters. Their primary goal is to find permanent homes for these cats through adoption.

  • Cat Sanctuary: Cat sanctuaries often focus on providing long-term or permanent care for cats that may be unadoptable due to age, health issues, behavioral problems, or other reasons. Their mission is to offer a safe and loving environment where these cats can live out their lives comfortably.

  • Little Rascals: At Little Rascals, our focus is a combination of the two. All of our cats have sad stories, but our goal is to make sure they have a happily ever after, too.

Adoption vs. Sanctuary Life:

  • Cat Rescue: Cat rescues work to rehabilitate and socialize rescued cats, preparing them for adoption into loving homes. They typically have adoption programs and facilitate the adoption process for suitable candidates.

  • Cat Sanctuary: Cat sanctuaries do not usually focus on adoption. Instead, they provide a lifelong home for cats that may not be suitable for adoption due to various reasons, ensuring they receive proper care and attention for the rest of their lives.

  • Little Rascals: At Little Rascals, we aim to help kitties socialize so they get along together; however, we do not have an adoption process because as a sanctuary, we are their fur-ever home.

Capacity and Resources:

  • Cat Rescue: Cat rescues often have limited capacity and resources, as they may rely heavily on foster homes or have a smaller physical facility. They usually operate with the goal of finding permanent homes for cats as quickly as possible to make room for more rescues.

  • Cat Sanctuary: Cat sanctuaries typically have larger facilities or properties dedicated to providing long-term care for cats. They may have more resources available for veterinary care, food, shelter, and enrichment activities to ensure the well-being of the resident cats.

  • Little Rascals: At Little Rascals, we operate from a single facility, where we prioritize creating a safe and clean environment for our furry residents. Our facility includes spacious rooms and an outdoor catio, offering our cats a wonderful oasis to enjoy their lives. While our resources are currently limited to what our founders and board members can provide, we are committed to expanding our fundraising and volunteer programs. By doing so, we aim to further develop, improve, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Little Rascals.

Volunteer and Support Structure:

  • Cat Rescue: Cat rescues often rely on volunteers, fosters, and donations to support their operations. They may have a network of volunteers who help with tasks such as fostering, transportation, fundraising, and administrative duties.

  • Cat Sanctuary: Cat sanctuaries also rely on volunteers and donations but may have a more permanent staff dedicated to the day-to-day care of resident cats. They may offer volunteer opportunities for tasks such as feeding, cleaning, socializing, and providing enrichment for the cats.

  • Little Rascals: At Little Rascals, everything from the day-to-day tasks of feeding, cleaning, and caring for our cats to managing our funding, operations, and social media presence is handled by our founders and board members. Although we do have a few volunteers, such as Jessica Watson (pictured above), we are enthusiastic about expanding our volunteer program as our organization expands.

Our goal at Little Rascals is to provide a safe haven and fur-ever home for cats that have been abandoned, abused, neglected, and are in desperate need of care.
